purgatory

Le Purgatoire is an electroacoustic opera for solo voices, mixed choirs and recorded sounds by Gérard Pape based on the second canticle of Dante's Divine Comedy on a libretto by Michel de Maulne, for which I created an installation of 12 original paintings painted on plexiglas.

The creation of the opera took place in the Saint-Martin church in Sargé-sur-Braye (Loir-et-Cher) on May 12, 13 and 14, 2023.

It is not a question of representing purgatory as described by Dante nor of illustrating the 33 sequences which lead him from hell to earthly paradise, but of creating a visual atmosphere in coherence with the musical and poetic work.

The installation embraces the space and geometry of the place of performance. It has its existence, its own life animated by the scenography and the lighting, from the most dense and opaque to the lightest and most transparent, like the soul which rises by purifying itself.
